BnB Plus Okubo International, Okuba nr. Shinjuku, Tokyo
Okuba is a quieter and cheaper gateway to the popular destination of Shinjuku, Japan. Nestled in the windy back-streets of Koreatown the smell of fresh meat and shōchū waft out from every corner. Okubo has stations on both the Chuo Sobu Line (Okubo) and the Yamanote Line (Shin Okubo). We arrived tired and weary from our previous hostel, Bunka, in Taito.
We had booked BnB Plus Okubo International through Booking.com and were relieved to discover that it was right outside the southern exit to Okubo station. We were doubly happy to see that there was a well-stocked 24-hour Family Mart store right next door, perfect for those late night noodle cravings.
The street seems fairly safe, late at night there might be a few stragglers hanging around the station if they missed the last train but we never had any problems. The Lawsons is open 24 hours and there is a major road nearby. I felt safe walking around alone at night. This location might not be suitable if you have mobility issues due to the sets of stairs you must walk up to reach the property. You can see them to right hand side of the family mart in this photo.
Come on in!
The reception is small, but check in is quick and easy. The staff speak good English for those of you who can’t speak Japanese and they're super friendly. Walking into reception if you have a lot of bags might be a struggle, in fact, if you have a lot of bags in general then this might not be the right base for you due to limited space. You’ll be asked, as always, to take your shoes off at the door and use the free slippers during your stay.
Is this a capsule hostel?
Although not technically a capsule hostel, the owners have uniquely used the space in a similar manner so in total there are 20+ cubicle-beds one on top of the other. There is a little curtain for privacy and a small wooden ladder for those who choose to sleep up top. The space is an adequate size and each box has clean sheets, two plug sockets and a reading light. It is perfect for late night manga readers.
The hostel has three toilets with four sink areas, each are very clean and tidy. There are dressing room-style spotlights around the mirrors above the sink which is ideal for applying makeup. In addition to the toilets there are two full bathrooms; each with a shower (wet-room style) and a bath. Towels can be rented for a small charge from the hostel. There are also hairdryers at the property if needed. It is worth noting that there is not a common room and so it can be noisy at night time. There is free coffee for guests, and a kettle (which is much needed if you're a cuppa-ramen fan).
Convenient, cheap and clean
If you want to stay near Shinjuku but are worried that the late night parties and general raucousness of the area will keep you awake then BnB Plus Okubo might be your ideal base. You can walk to Shinjuku in 10 minutes, the interesting area of Nagano is just 10 minutes by public transport or 50 minutes by foot. I really enjoyed my stay here and would happily stay again.
