An afternoon snack at Afternoon Deli in Grass Valley, CA

Turning into the car park of K-Mart in downtown Grass Valley in autumn and you expect to find the usual suspects: the weary Californian trimmigrants, looking for work with scissor signs, the old homeless man who can tell you epic stories of a by-gone era (well, certainly pre Kart-Mart) and the general bods going shopping. Now, there is something to note when I say ‘general bods’ because many people that live in this county are on the same normal level as Rick and Morty. In fact that's a fairly good analogy of their lives… crazy, phantasmogarian and in many cases downright silly. But, I digress to the characters of the car park, rather, as we turn into the car park I'm surprised to see us stopping at the cafe next door to K-Mart

Now if I were I England this cafe would be a Skank-bucks or Crap-osta but, of course I'm delighted to see that this cafe is organic, with vegan options and is downright adorable.

We grabbed a table for three; my boyfriend, myself and our dear friend Robyn. There was so much food-porn on offer that I really struggled with my order. Even when faced with the simple question of “salad, fries, coleslaw or potato salad as your side?” ahhhh! I opted for the vegan potato salad and, as with everything else, it was d-e-l-i-cious. So we sat down, me with my veggie sandwich (I was swayed by the humous and olive spread!), my boyfriend Marc with a big bag of yummy skin-on fries and Robyn with the classic Tempeh Reuben Sandwich.

Coming in at about $10 each with drinks it was definitely worth the price. Our stomachs were full and happy but not stodgy, our whistles had been whetted with fresh hibiscus tea and lemonade, and the weight in our wallets hadn't considerably decreased. All in all, it was three times the win. So, if you happen to be passing through Grass Valley be sure to check in and have some food for the soul.
