Ben Lomond Baking Co.

Ben Lomond Baking Co.

We've got a hidden treat in a hidden town on the outskirts of Santa Cruz for you to enjoy. The town of Ben Lomond is so small that you could drive through it in a blink of an eye but there is a few good reasons to stop here on your journey to or from Santa Cruz.

The biggest pull has to be the Ben Lomond Bakery which was taken over in November from original owners, who established it in 2015, by Sicilian owner Leonardo La Placa. With his extensive knowledge the bakery has continued to thrive and has become a well recognized ‘stop-place’ along the Highway 9, and with good reason.

On route with a girlfriend to Santa Cruz we stopped by mid morning for a hot drink and breakfast. First impressions were pleasantly surprising, the location is large and bright with both indoor and outdoor seating so you can take can enjoy the view of the redwood trees as you scoff down your morning breakkie. In true Sicillian manner the service is impeccable and welcoming. The main thing that struck me was the amount of choice on offer with a variety of brioches, cakes, muffins and doughnuts I was overwhelmed with choice.

We decided on the mushroom besciamella brioche and after a few italian customers recommendation's  we indulged in a Nutella doughnut hole. With a tea and mocha it came in at a reasonable 14 USD.

Oh god. It was so good…. So much so that we lost the ability to speak and could only make appreciative noises with the occasional head nod thrown in. The dough is incredible  at this Italian bakery and with the chef having over 30 years experience we’re not surprised that they have mastered the art of perfect dough.

Not much of a coffee drinker I didn't have an espresso but I know that the coffee here is extremely popular, so much so that they even offer take away brewed coffee boxes which is a fantastic idea, something that I had not seen before.

Considering that on a weekday the bakery opens at 5.30am in order to prepare for the day ahead I'm sure that the workers themselves could do with one of the boxed coffees!

With a steady flow of customers it keeps a homely feel with dedicated (and enthusiastic) regulars stopping by. The service was perfectly polite and you can tell that everyone really cares about ensuring that customers can enjoy fantastic tasting food in a warm and inviting atmosphere.

I'm sitting here writing this blog so I'm going to go back to enjoying my treat now. Have a good day readers!
